Solitaire online free: calm classics with big, clear cards

Solitaire online free means you can open a page and play a full game of solitaire with no download and no account. This hub collects the calm, easy games that suit that mood: spider solitaire, klondike, a card puzzle with heroes, memory matching, tile matching and a hex puzzle. The cards are big and clear, the deal is instant, and a game ends whenever you want it to.

Solitaire is a great browser game because it is a solo game with no clock, no opponent and no pressure. You can play for two minutes or two hours. If someone walks into the room, you can close the tab. The rules are old and well known, so the game does not need a tutorial.

It also trains a useful habit: looking one or two moves ahead before you act. That is the real skill in every game here. A careless move early on can lock a column for the rest of the game, and a patient one can unlock a win from a bad-looking deal.

The sections below help you pick a game, explain how they differ, and share some habits for winning more often.

Spider vs. klondike: which solitaire is right for you

These two games look alike but feel very different.

Klondike

The classic. Build four foundation piles from ace to king, moving cards between columns in alternating colors.

  • Draw 1 card (easier) or 3 cards (tighter)
  • Not every deal can be won

Spider

Build runs inside the columns and complete full runs of cards.

  • Rewards planning more than speed
  • Undo, smart hints and automatic run detection

Klondike solitaire

Play Klondike Solitaire → Open source

Klondike is the one most people picture when they hear “solitaire”. You build four foundation piles up from ace to king, and you move cards between columns in alternating colors. Not every deal can be won, and part of the game is deciding whether to keep trying or to start a new one.

The Klondike version here supports drawing 1 or 3 cards. Drawing one card is easier and a good place to begin. Three-card draws are tighter, and every move matters more.

The Klondike table: the stock on the left, four foundations on the right, seven columns below. The tinted cards are face down.

Spider solitaire

Play Spider Solitaire → Open source

Spider Solitaire is a longer, more thoughtful game. Instead of building on foundations, you build runs inside the columns, and the aim is to complete full runs of cards. Because you work with many cards in a column at once, it rewards planning more than speed.

The version here is built around local practice play. It lists undo, smart hints and automatic run detection, so you can try out ideas and take a move back. Aizi’s tip: use undo to test one idea, not to avoid every mistake. You learn more from a bad move you can see.

The other games

Emerland Solitaire adds a story, with levels and heroes. Matching Pairs is a pure memory test, scored by your time. Cartoon Mahjong is about spotting free tiles. Hextris is a falling-blocks puzzle built around a spinning hexagon. They are all easy to start and calm to play.

Controls that work everywhere

Card games are close to perfect for the mouse and for touch.

InputHow it works
MouseClick and drag a card to move it. Many solitaire versions also move a card for you with a single click, so try clicking before you drag.
TouchTap or drag, depending on the game. Hold your phone in portrait for solitaire, since the columns are tall.
KeyboardMost of these games do not need it. Hextris and some others may show key controls on the first screen.

The Klondike version here supports drag-and-drop and a single click that makes a smart move, with the foundation first. If you are ever unsure what a button does, hover over it or look for a small help icon.

How to get better at card games

  1. Look before you move. Spend a few seconds scanning the whole board each turn. Most wins come from seeing a chain of moves.
  2. Uncover hidden cards first. In klondike and spider, turning a face-down card over opens new options. Prioritize moves that do that.
  3. Empty a column when you can. An empty column is the most flexible space on the board.
  4. Do not rush to the foundation. Sending a card up early can block a move you need later.
  5. Keep runs in one suit in spider. Mixed-suit runs cannot move together, and they slow you down.
  6. Use undo to learn. Test an idea, see the result, then take it back if it is bad.
  7. Start a new deal when you are stuck. Some deals are not worth finishing. Moving on is part of the game.

In memory games like Matching Pairs, a simple tip is to scan the whole board once and say positions out loud as you go. For tile games, plan the order of matches so you never trap a tile under another one.

Making a solitaire session last

Solitaire is easy to start and easy to stop, which makes it a good break game. A few habits help you get more from each session.

Decide how long you will play before you begin. If you only have five minutes, aim for one deal. If you have thirty, aim for a few and try a new approach in each. Treat a lost deal as information: where did you get stuck, and what could you have moved earlier?

Try changing the variety, too. After a few klondike deals, switch to Spider Solitaire for a different kind of thinking, then to Cartoon Mahjong when you want to rest your brain. The card games build planning. The matching games build attention. Switching between them keeps each one fresh.

The open-source solitaire games here list some handy extras. Spider Solitaire keeps local stats in your browser, and Klondike Solitaire shows a deal number so you can replay the same deal. Look in the menu for these before you start.

The calm games: matching, mahjong and Hextris

Not every game in this hub is a card game, and that is on purpose. Sometimes you want something with no suits at all.

Matching Pairs is the simplest: match similar shapes, and your time is your score. The only strategy is memory, so try to remember where things are as you flip them instead of guessing. Cartoon Mahjong is a relaxing tile game for brain training. You clear the board by matching free tiles, and the main skill is noticing which tiles are free and which are buried.

Hextris is an open-source puzzle where coloured blocks fall onto a spinning hexagon. Check the first screen for its controls before your first try. It is a good pick when you want something with more movement than solitaire but with the same easy, tidy feel.

Emerland Solitaire sits in the middle. It is a card puzzle with levels and heroes, so it adds a small story to the usual rules. Try it when plain solitaire starts to feel repetitive.

All of these are free, run in the browser and need no account. They also work well in short bursts, so you can play one round, close the tab and come back later.

A quick word on luck and skill

People sometimes say solitaire is all luck. It is not. A share of deals cannot be won, but many losses come from early choices: which hidden cards you uncover first and which columns you empty. That is why the habits above matter: they raise your odds on the deals that can be won.

If you want a fair way to track improvement, play ten deals and count your wins, then play ten more after practicing one new habit, such as emptying a column early. Small samples are noisy, so do not read too much into one bad day.
