Checkers Unblocked: Play Free Online

Checkers is one of the oldest board games around, and it still takes a minute to learn. You can play Checkers unblocked in your browser, with no download, no install and no account. Play Checkers online free against an AI or share the screen with a friend.

How to play Checkers

You move pieces diagonally across the board. Capture your opponent’s pieces by jumping over them, advance toward the far side, and promote a piece to a king when it gets there. Kings are stronger because they have more freedom to move.

You win by capturing all of your opponent’s pieces or by blocking all of their available moves. If you can’t move, you lose, so keeping options open matters as much as taking pieces.

Your piece Opponent piece: jumped and captured Landing square, diagonal and just beyond Pieces move diagonally. Reach the far side to promote a piece to a king.
A capture is a jump over an opponent piece along a diagonal.

The game has three AI difficulty levels: Easy, Medium and Hard. You can also play a friend on the same device. It includes three rule sets: Russian, International and English. They differ in details such as board size and how pieces capture, so check the rule set before the first move.

Tips to get better

  • Keep your pieces together. A piece with a friend behind it is hard to capture, and a lone piece is easy to jump.
  • Control the center. Center squares give you more moves and more ways to attack.
  • Protect your back row. Pieces at home stop your opponent from getting kings.
  • Look for forced captures. Depending on the rule set, you may have to capture. Use that to pull an opponent’s piece out of position.
  • Trade when you’re ahead. Swapping pieces one for one helps the side with more pieces.
  • Plan two moves ahead. Before you move, ask what your opponent can capture afterward.
  • Get a king, then use it. A king can reach pieces that ordinary pieces can’t, so look for jumps from behind.

Which rule set to pick

If you play checkers in the US, the English rules are the familiar choice. International and Russian rules are common in other parts of the world, and they change how pieces capture and how kings move. Try each one. The game is the same at heart, but small differences change which tactics work.

Start on Easy while you learn.

Easy

Gives you time to practice captures and kings.

Medium

Move here when you win consistently.

Hard

A real challenge.

Playing with a friend is the best way to learn the rule sets, because you can talk through each move. Agree on the rule set before you start so neither player gets a surprise.

Aizi's tip when you can’t decide between two moves, pick the one that keeps your pieces linked. A connected group is hard to attack.

Learning from each game

Checkers is a game of small edges. One piece up often decides a long game, so every trade matters. After a loss, look back for the moment you lost a piece without getting one in return. That’s usually the turning point.

The game works well for quick rounds. On Easy, a game can be over in a few minutes, and on Hard it can take longer as the AI makes fewer mistakes. If you play with a friend, take turns being the first mover, since going first is a small edge in many rule sets.

It’s also a fine game to teach someone. The rules fit in a short conversation, and the board shows what’s possible, so a new player can get going without reading a manual.
